Víctor Rolando Arroyo Carmona was
Sentenced to 26 years in prison.


(HAVANA/CUBA/April 6th /Puenteinfocubamiami.org) –
The independent journalist Víctor Rolando Arroyo
Carmona, tried in a “quick trial”, on Thursday,
April 3rd, along with four more pacific oppositionists,
at the Technological School “First of May”, in the
city of Pinar del Río, was sentenced to twenty six
years in prison, revealed Ania Hernández Alvarez.

For the defendants in Cause No. 348/03, the prosecution
Requested life in prison for Víctor Rolando Arroyo
Carmona, independent journalist with (UPECI), who
collaborates with CubaNet since 1996, and director of
the Independent Library “Reyes Magos”; 25 years for
activists Horacio Julio Piña Borrego and Fidel Suárez
Cruz; and 30 years for Eduardo Díaz Fleites, member
of the August 5th Movement in Pinar del Río.

All oppositionists were accused of violating article 91 of
the Penal Code, and the Law of Protection of the Economy
and National Independence (Law 88), approved on 1999,
which prohibits the diffusion or exchange of news considered
contradictory to that of the official policy implemented by the
present regime in Cuba. Pedro Urra, a lawyer, and also a
journalist, testified against the defendants.

According to information given by Elsa González Padrón,
wife of Arroyo Carmona, a judge at a Court of the Popular
Power in the province of Pinar del Rio adjudicated the
following sentences:

Víctor Rolando Arroyo Carmona - 26 years in prison.
Horacio Julio Piña Borrego – 20 years in prison.
Fidel Suárez Cruz - 20 years in prison.
Eduardo Diaz Fleites- 21 years in prison.

These five activists are part of the group of eighty one
pacific fighters for the democracy in Cuba, arrested in
the recent wave of repression unleashed by the Cuban
regime on March 18th.
