Urgent Joint Declaration No. 4
(HAVANA/CUBA/ June 29th/Puenteinfocubamiami.org)-
In marking the one hundredth day of the most recent
campaign of repression, that drove to the imprisonment
of many more new prisoners of conscience, We, the
undersigned, have convened the following:
1. - We ratify our condemnation to the cruel and unjust
campaign of repression unleashed against a group of
compatriots, all dissidents, whose composition in essence
reflects the rich democratic diversity within the Cuban
dissidence.
2. - We denounce the fact that, in the last weeks, the
security section of the Supreme Tribunal has been ratifying
their arbitrary sentences and thus becoming irrevocable.
3.- We protest vigorously the inhuman conditions - in
general terms –in which those imprisoned dissidents are
maintained: far from their county of residence, in isolated
cells full with pests, separated from those who share their
ideals, mingled with common prisoners of all types, without
the possibility to express themselves freely, with a supply
of food and water that leaves much to be desired, without
professional medical attention and for only being allowed
one visit every three months. It is logical to assume- as
it has been denounced- that this terrible situation affects
the most those prisoners with extremely serious health
conditions.
4. - We also denounce the current slander campaign against the opposition,
which is in fact centered in those now in prison, through the diffusion of
the book "The Dissidents", which is nothing more than the malicious
testimonies of individuals that called themselves oppositionists, those
which - in our opinion - lack the intellectual and moral solvency that
requires an effort of such magnitude if it is going to have a minimum degree
of validity.
5. - We express our gratefulness to the democrats that, in
Latin America and in the rest of the World have expressed
their solidarity with the political prisoners; in particular,
to the European Union, they have become now, next to the
United States, a favorite objective of the virulent attacks
of the present regime, compromising the international relations of the
Republic, as viewed in the recent protests carried out before the diplomatic
Missions of Spain and Italy in Havana.
6. - We salute and we thank the solidarity of all the exiles
that have contributed in a generous way to the success of the great concert
celebrated last 20th in Miami; and for many other similar efforts. Those
contributions - were made by compatriots that, although they reside abroad,
they are as much Cubans as those of us that live in the "archipelago" - they
constitute a firm and eloquent denial to the calumnious statements of the
regime, about political prisoners and dissidents being financed by the
Government of The United States.
7. - With the present declaration, as with the rest of the
work we do in conjunction, we confirm once more, our united position, which
reflects the views of most of the sincere dissidents.
