Press Release from Cuban Political Prisoners on the
Agenda for a Transition
SANTA CLARA, CUBA- April 21 (Guillermo Farinas Hernandez, Cubanacan
Press Puenteinfocubamiami.org) – Cuban Political prisoners and that of
conscience Felix Navarro Rodriguez and Pablo Pacheco Avila, convicted during
the wave of repression in 2003, known as "Black Spring of Cuba "and serving
their time at the Moron Prison in Ciego de Avila, issued last week a press
release over the telephone motivated by the creation of the Agenda for the
Transition, created by a group of Cuban opposition leaders and translated
below.
Moron Prison, Ciego de Avila, April 14, 2008.
We, the undersigned political prisoners and that of conscience, whom have
sacrificed our liberty and honor on behalf of our homeland’s liberty, as
members of the so called "Group of 75", sanctioned between the months of
March and April 2003, have learned through our closest relatives that 18 of
our brothers, leaders of the dissident civic non-violent opposition have
arrived to a united conclusion regarding the Agenda for a Transition.
We are happy for them and us, we are also proud, because most of them our
counterparts have suffered imprisonment on several occasions, while others
have endured lengthy sentences of up to 17 years in prison; which has left
them very ill but still continue to struggle, at times alone struggling for
democratic changes in our homeland. .
We would like to inform the national and international public opinion, that
this is one of the best news we have received. Congratulations to the
creators of the "Agenda for the Transition”, we wish them well and we urge
them to go continue with the project which calls for civil and democratic
changes our country needs after 50 years of abuse in a totalitarian regime.
On a personal note, we feel privileged to be friends with most of the
leaders of this idea.
We are in accord with Agreement No. 31 of the "Agenda for the Transition",
which demands of the Cuban totalitarian regime the freedom for all political
prisoners without exile. We want and should be freed because we are innocent
men and must be allowed to walk freely in our homeland and should not be
forced to live in exile.
For us behind bars, is a serious commitment to be declared honorary members
of the newly form Agenda for the Transition. As political prisoners we
pledge to never surrender or collaborate with with our ideological
adversaries so we can be worthy of this special mention.
At the same time we call upon our brothers in exile, as expressed Agreement
No. 15: "It is essential the active participation of the Cuban exile in any
decisions that has to do with the destiny of the nation." To support
spiritual, material and severally the "Agenda for the Transition" because
now is the time to show that we are patriotic.
For the freedom and democracy in Cuba,
Felix Navarro Rodriguez,
Political Prisoner and that of Conscience
sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Pablo Pacheco Avila
Political Prisoner of Conscience and sentenced
to 20 years imprisonment.
