National Executive Secretary of the Project of
Independent Libraries of Cuba was detained.

RANCHUELO, CUBA - February 1st (Felix
Gutierrez Reyes, Cubanacán Press / Puenteinfocubamiami.org) –Last January
26, the political police detained Omaida Padrón Ascuy, Executive Secretary
of the Independent Libraries Project of Cuba (PBIC) due to supposed anti-
government activities in Havana.
Guillermo Fariñas Hernandez, National Coordinator of the PBIC said that
around 10:30 am Padrón Ascuy and independent librarian José Agramonte left
her home which is located at Street 18 between Linea and Calzada Avenues in
the Capital, and they were unexpectedly intercepted by an officer of the
political police.
A member of the State Security, who identified himself as Juan Carlos,
advised Omaida she was under arrest. The source added that Agramontes
inquired as to why he was not arrested along with Omaida and that the
officer replied: “At the moment we are not interested in taking to you”.
Omaida was transferred to Police Unit #6 in Marianao were she was
interrogated for over 30 minutes and later two police officers returned the
peaceful dissident to her home in a green Lada Car.
Padrón Ascuy was questioned regarding her ties with opposition leaders
Elizardo Sanchez Santacruz, Marta Beatriz Roque Cabello, Vladimiro Antúnez
Roque, and Carlos de Jesus Menendez, acting director of PBIC. Omaida was
released and returned home at around 5:30 in the afternoon, concluded the
