They beat-up peaceful
dissidents in Santa Clara
SANTA CLARA, CUBA - February 1st (Yoel Espinosa Medrano, Cubanacán
Press / Puenteinfocubamiami.org ) - On January 28 several peaceful
opponents in the city of Santa Clara were beaten by members of the police
for demanding the immediate release of opponent Jorge Luis Garcia Perez (
Antunez).
According to journalist Felix Reyes Gutierrez, who was amongst those who
were beaten, 11 human right activists went to the headquarters of the
Criminal Investigation Unit of the State Security, located at Camajuani
and Circunvalacion Roads, to demand Antunez´s immediate release.
The group arrived at the above mentioned location at around five o’clock
in the afternoon.
Reyes Gutierrez contacted the head of the Chief of instruction of the
State Security Carlos Fidel Rodriguez Machado and informed him that they
would not leave the premises until Antunez they released Antunez.
The official emphasized that Antúnez was incarcerated at the Provincial
Penal Instruction Unit for Common Crimes where he was going to be charged
with the supposed crimes of Contempt and Resistance. He also added that
said unit was not in his jurisdiction.
Demonstrators remained seated on the outskirts of the police unit and
around 11 pm, they were approached by more than 60 police officers, some
in uniform others in civilian clothes, backed by eight patrol cars and
began to kick and punch demonstrators, and proceeded to push them inside
the patrol cars while activists shouted: "Long live human rights" and "Down
with Fidel".
In conclusion Yuniesky Garcia Lopez, Yancy Michael Ruiz Martinez and
Carlos Rodriguez were taken to police units on 3rd, 4th and 5th of the
above mentioned municipality.
In turn, Idania Yánez Contreras Yesmy Elena Mena Zurbano, Maria del Carmen
Martinez Lopez, Alcides Rivera Rodriguez, Alexis Martinez, Pedro Yordy
Tápanes Garcia, Jorge Luis Artiles Felix Montiel and were taken to their
homes.
The following day, in the morning hours, García López, Ruiz Martínez and
Michael Rodríguez were released as well as Antúnez.
