PRESS RELEASE/ “PLANTADOS" UNTIL THE LIBERTY AND
DEMOCRACY IN CUBA
February 15, 2008
We received information from Havana that four Cuban political prisoners, who
were sent to prison in March of 2003, will be released and sent to Spain.
They are:
Pedro Pablo Álvarez Ramos, president of the Unitary Council of Workers,
an independent labor movement, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison,
Omar Pernet Hernández ( Bertha Antunez’s uncle), and member of the Pedro
Luis Boitel Movement, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison,
Alejandro González Raga, member of the Christian Liberation Movement, who
was sentenced to 14 years in prison and
José Gabriel Ramón Castillo, an independent journalist who was sentenced
to 20 years in prison.
All of them will be traveling to Spain this coming weekend, coinciding with
the visit to Cuba of Spain’s Chancellor Moratinos. There are also rumors
that other political prisoners could also be released.
Every time a Cuban political prisoner is released its a joyous occasion for
”Plantados” until the Liberty and Democracy in Cuba, but we are observant
that historically, the regime uses political prisoners as handouts that are
given to government leaders or other important international personalities
with the mean-spirited purpose of soliciting political favors that would
benefit the dictatorship.
Plantados continues to demand liberty without exile - or any other
condition- for all the Cuban political prisoners without exception.
