A Special Punishment Regime was inaugurated in a
prison in Cienfuegos

SANTA CLARA, CUBA, January 17 (Yoel Espinosa Medrano, Cubanacán Press
/ Puenteinfocubamiami.org) –Last January 13th, prison authorities at the
Ariza Prison in Cienfuegos, Cuba, inaugurated an area of Special Regime to
punish and isolate prisoners.
The inauguration act which took place before the penal population and
presided by Lieutenant Colonel Tomas Vargas Diaz, Chief of Penal
Establishments in the South of the Island, was accompanied by the Director
of the above mentioned prison Lieutenant Colonel Jorge Gonzalez Hernandez.
Head of this new area is Major Hermes Rodriguez and a sub-official that goes
by the name of Duvier, who is characterized for his aggressiveness with the
prisoners. This new area consists of 6 individual cells, 2 meters wide by 4
meters long and 3 meters high with a hole in the floor for prisoner’s
biological needs.
The penal population was informed that those confined in this area would
have family visits every 4 months, married pavilions every 6 months and no
telephone calls, newspapers or television privileges.
The source of this information, Luis Cueto Echevarria, a member of the
¨Pedro Luis Boitel¨ Political Prison stated that in this area, the solarium
is a metal cage.
