"Inhumane conditions in Cuban prisons"
CAMAGUEY, CUBA – January 20 (Angel Escobedo Morales/www.plantados.org)-
The Cuban political prisoner Angel Escobedo Morales sent a note to Plantados
from the prison Cerámica Roja in Camaguey, describing the inhumane
conditions inside Cuba’s prisons.
In his note, Morales points out prisoners are forced to live in overcrowded
small cells infested with rodents and other insects that bite inmates while
they sleep at night.
Inmates’ cells are unhygienic and have no potable water. Their diet is
dreadful and they never receive sunlight.
Medical and dental assistance is appalling. Medications are non existent and
when they have any at the prison’s infirmary they are always expired.
Religious assistance is limited and sporadic.
Visits and family pavilions are every 3 to 6 months and the mail is
censured, irregular and many times they destroyed without being given to us,
continues saying Morales.
Political prisoner’s family visits and marital pavilions are restricted to
one every three to six months and their mail is also restricted and most of
the times destroyed.
Political prisoners are forced to live with common prisoners; some of whom
are extremely dangerous, sanctioned for committing capital crimes.
Political prisoners are forced to live with inmates infected with HIV,
tuberculosis and other highly contagious diseases.
Prisoners are severely beaten, are treated inhumanely and are verbally
abused by prison guards, who are highly corrupted – to the point- that a few
months back, the new Warden Tomas David Padron Garcia was punished for
stealing cement and tiles from the prison facility.
Information received at the Offices of Plantados Hasta la Libertad y la
Democracia en Cuba on the 15th day of January and sent to the Information
Bridge Cuba Miami (www.puenteinfocubamiami.org) for distribution.
